The Hibagon is a gorilla-like creature reported around Mount Hiba in the mountains of northern Hiroshima Prefecture. Witnesses in the early 1970s described an animal about 5 feet tall with dark bristly hair, a large nose, deep glaring eyes and pale hands and feet.
The sightings drew national press. The town of Saijo set up a Hibagon office to log reports, and local Boy Scouts said they found footprints about 10 inches long. Reports faded by the mid-1970s, but the Hibagon became a local mascot and still appears on signs and souvenirs.
