The amomongo is an ape-like creature in the folklore of Negros island in the Philippines, said to live in caves near the foot of the volcano Mount Kanlaon. Its name likely comes from the Hiligaynon word for ape or monkey.
In June 2008, residents of La Castellana said an amomongo clawed two men, leaving them with scratches, and killed goats and chickens over two nights. Witnesses described a hairy ape with long sharp nails, about the height of a person.
Local people describe it as a wild animal rather than a supernatural being. Officials and scientists suggested a misidentified animal, such as a large monkey or wild cat, and nothing was caught.
