On 22 August 1972, the Victoria Daily Times reported that two teenage boys said a silver-scaled, man-shaped creature with claws and a sharp, spiked head rose out of Thetis Lake and chased them off the beach. Two other boys fishing on the far shore said they saw it too. The RCMP investigated and found nothing.
Years later skeptic Daniel Loxton tracked down one of the witnesses, who admitted the story was made up. Loxton found the description matched the monster in Monster from the Surf, a film shown on local TV just days earlier.
