Moonie is the local name for a creature people say lives in Moon Lake, a deep mountain lake at about 8,100 feet in the Uinta Mountains of northeast Utah. It is much less famous than the Bear Lake Monster, but it is a fixture of stories at the lake's old resort.
Witnesses describe a large, dark, snake-like shape that leaves a V-shaped wake, or something like a bumpy log 12 to 15 feet long that seems to follow boats. Guests have sent their own accounts to the resort over the years, but almost none are dated or named.
The lake was enlarged by a dam in the 1930s and is over 100 feet deep in places, which feeds stories about bottomless spots and hidden channels. Beavers, otters, big trout and floating logs are the likely explanations.
