Retired air-traffic controller Harlan Ford said he saw a tall, grey-haired creature with yellow eyes in the Honey Island Swamp in 1963. He later found webbed, four-toed tracks and made casts, which became the centre of the legend.
Swamp-tour guides around Slidell still tell the story, and the creature is now part of Louisiana's rich mix of bayou folklore alongside the rougarou.
