The Syilx people speak of N'ha-a-itk, a powerful spirit of Okanagan Lake who demanded offerings for safe crossing. Settlers reported a long, serpent-like animal from the 1870s, and a 1924 music-hall song gave it the name Ogopogo.
Descriptions are of a dark, 40 to 50 ft serpent with several humps. A statue of Ogopogo stands in Kelowna's City Park.
