The Almas is described as more human than ape: a hairy, man-sized wild person living in remote mountains. Russian researchers, notably Marie-Jeanne Koffmann, collected hundreds of eyewitness accounts in the Caucasus from the 1960s onward.
The legend of Zana, a "wild woman" said to have been captured in Abkhazia in the 1800s, is often linked to the Almas.
