The lock started to unlock itself!
Two friends were living in a trailer in the middle of nowhere in Utah, at least twenty miles from the nearest town, with a reservation about two hundred feet from the property line. Over a few days in November 2020, things started going wrong. Their truck began to stink of sulfur and rotten meat, and so did the trailer, which they kept spotless. There wasn't any meat on the property. At night they heard scratching and knocking, which made no sense that far out.
One night they decided to go find whatever it was. About two miles from the truck they caught the smell of sulfur, and then both of them saw a silhouette, six or seven feet tall, running straight at them. They sprinted back to the truck, and of course it wouldn't start. One of them jumped out, grabbed a wrench from the toolbox, pulled the intake, sprayed in some ether and put it back on. It fired up, and they peeled out.
The truck, a turbocharged Ford diesel that normally does 70 or 80, wouldn't go past about 55. Looking back, the passenger saw the thing still behind them, keeping pace. They made it the last mile to the trailer, ran inside, locked the door and covered every window with blankets. As the last blanket went up, something started tugging at the door. One of them held it shut. Then the lock began to turn by itself. They tied it in place with a bootlace, grabbed a hammer, and waited.
A minute later, a text arrived from a girl one of them liked, who never texted back. She said she was in trouble and needed them to come get her right now. They were halfway out the door when they asked if she had money for diesel. Her reply: why would she want to see them? They hadn't talked in months. She'd never sent the first message. They stayed inside. Later that night, vaguely familiar voices called their names from outside. Neither of them looked.
In the morning there was nothing: no scratches on the trailer, no dents, no prints. Over the next few days they took people's advice, put a salt line around the trailer, stopped giving the thing their attention, and prayed. They also went over to the reservation to ask for help, without much luck. By the fifth night the knocking and scratching had stopped.
