On November 14, 2004, Navy pilots from the USS Nimitz carrier group were sent to intercept an object tracked on radar off San Diego. Commander David Fravor described a smooth, white, 40-ft object shaped like a Tic Tac that moved with no visible means of propulsion.
The New York Times published the FLIR1 video in 2017, along with the Gimbal and GoFast videos from 2015 East Coast encounters. The Pentagon formally released all three in 2020, a turning point that led to the creation of AARO and public congressional hearings.
