Crash stories are some of the most famous in ufology: something falls from the sky, the military seals off the area, and witnesses say the debris, or bodies, were taken away in secret.
In July 1947 the Roswell Army Air Field announced it had recovered a 'flying disc' on a ranch in New Mexico, then said it was a weather balloon. In the 1990s the Air Force said it was debris from Project Mogul, a secret balloon program. On 9 December 1965 a fireball came down near Kecksburg, Pennsylvania, and residents described an acorn-shaped object hauled away by soldiers. On 4 October 1967 witnesses at Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia saw a lit object hit the sea, and the RCMP and navy searched the water.
Explanations include balloons, meteors and space debris. Each case still has dedicated researchers.
