Mamlambo is a powerful river being in Zulu and other southern African traditions, often described as a huge snake-like creature and sometimes linked to wealth and its dangers.
In early 1997 South African newspapers reported that villagers near Mount Ayliff blamed a 'giant reptile' in the Mzintlava River for several deaths. They described a creature about 20 metres long with a horse-like head, a snake's neck, short legs and a fish-like tail, glowing green at night. Police said the injuries on the bodies came from crabs after drowning.
The panic earned the creature the nickname 'the brain sucker'. A later TV expedition found nothing.
