In the early morning of October 26, 1978, several people in Clarenville, Newfoundland, near Random Island, saw an oval object with a fin on its tail hovering over the water and called the RCMP.
Constable James Blackwood went out and watched the object hover about 100 feet above the water for one to two hours before it vanished. He looked at it through a surveillance telescope, and other witnesses used binoculars. Blackwood said that whenever he shone his car headlights at it, the object lit up in response.
Twelve people in all reported the sighting. It is one of several Canadian cases in which a police officer was an eyewitness.
