It looked like it could see us.
In the winter of 2023 the teller was visiting family who live in heavily wooded country in Wisconsin, with snow on the ground. They were sleeping on the floor of a younger cousin's room, and around two in the morning the two of them were still awake, playing a video game while everyone else slept.
The porch light outside works on a motion sensor, and it clicked on. They assumed it was an animal. The family had a raccoon that kept raiding the cat food box, so they weren't worried. It came on again. When they finally shut the game off to sleep, the light was still on, which meant whatever had triggered it was still moving out there.
They went to the window. At first they saw nothing. Then the cousin elbowed the teller and swore under his breath.
Further out, past the porch, stood an animal that was tall, almost as tall as a person or maybe taller, with eyes so reflective they looked as if they were glowing orange. It seemed to be looking straight at them, as though it could see them through the glass. Their first thought was a coyote, but it was far too big and didn't look like any coyote they'd ever seen.
Eventually it moved off, and after a while the light timed out and went dark. The room had no curtains, so they hung a towel over the window before trying to sleep.
In the morning the aunt and uncle said they had noticed the light on in the night and assumed it was the kids or the raccoon. Told what the cousins had seen, they said it was probably a coyote.
Outside, though, there were huge footprints in the snow. Snow had been melting overnight and all morning, so they weren't crisp enough to make out properly, but they were big. The aunt and uncle didn't know what had made them. They weren't frightened, just puzzled. The teller only learned the word "dogman" years later, and the description fit.
