The bull nothing would eat

A ranch family that had run cattle for generations found a $10,000 bull dead in the field, its cheeks and tongue cut away, fresh burn marks over the brand, and no blood anywhere.

Where is the blood? Why won't anything eat the carcass?

Their spouse's family has run a big cattle ranch outside a tiny, middle-of-nowhere town in northern Nevada for generations. In all that time, nobody had ever found anything like this.

On the morning of Monday, December 23rd, 2024, their brother-in-law came across a dead bull in one of the fields. Judging by the body, it had died just after dark the night before.

The bull's cheeks had been cut off, along with its tongue and the tip of its right ear. The cuts looked like knife work, not surgical precision. On its ribs were dash-shaped marks that looked burnt, sitting right over the ranch's brand. There was a large swelling on the neck where it lay, which the family thought might just be fluid settling. They wondered about an injection site but couldn't find one.

What really bothered them was everything that wasn't there. There was no blood. And in a place full of coyotes, ravens and every other scavenger, nothing would touch the carcass. They went back and photographed it again three days later, out in the weeds, and it was still being left alone.

Some of it pointed to plain old foul play, and the sheriff's office was following up on a lead from a local motel where some strangers had stayed that night. Pieces of the bull were cut off and frozen for testing. But the family couldn't make the rest of it add up. If someone was after meat, why take the cheeks and tongue and leave a whole bull? If it was poisoned, why bother cutting it at all? And why burn new marks over an old brand?

The older generation wanted to keep the whole thing quiet. The younger ones wanted answers, which is why the story ended up online. As they put it: some of the evidence screams foul play, but the missing blood and the scavengers keeping their distance are what keep them up at night.
