Was that you?

At a remote birthday campout, an Eagle Scout walked up the hill toward the cars, thinking his friends from New Jersey had found the place. A loud double whoop came first, then two knocks, then a crack like a tree breaking.

I had never heard anything like this.

The teller is an Eagle Scout who spent his summers teaching at a summer camp and went on week-long wilderness survival trips as a teenager. He has had more close encounters with bears than he'd like. He is, he says, rational and skeptical, and has never once met a ghost.

About six years before he posted, he was camping in the Mount Hood National Forest, an hour or so from Salem, for his then-girlfriend's birthday, with about a dozen friends swimming and drinking by a river. It wasn't an official campground. It was a remote spot reached by directions like "right at the broken fence, then right at the tree with a 5 spray-painted on it," with nobody else around for miles. Their cars were parked at the top of a very steep hill above the riverside camp.

That same night, friends visiting from New Jersey for the first time were arriving in Oregon after driving up the coast. He'd given them the same hopeless directions in case they felt adventurous, but with no phone signal and darkness falling, he never expected them to find it.

Around midnight he thought he heard someone moving around up by the cars. Thinking it might be his friends after all, he left the group and headed for the hill. At the bottom of the slope, a loud call rang out: "Whhhh-OOP! Whhhhhhh-OOP!" In all his years in the woods, he had never heard anything like it.

He ran up the hill, which took a good thirty seconds, and reached the top just as his friends' headlights came over the rise. Before he could even ask how they'd found the place, he blurted, "Was that you?" They had no idea what he meant. They had been driving and hadn't heard a thing.

Then, in the confused silence, came two knocks, like a rock hitting a tree, and a few seconds later the loudest crack he had ever heard in the woods. It sounded as if someone had snapped a century-old oak in half. Then nothing.

Back at the fire, the others had heard both the whoop and the crash, and refused to believe he hadn't made them himself. He thought no more about it until years later, when a TV show played what researchers believe a Sasquatch call sounds like, a long whoop, and he recognized it instantly.
