All three of us shouted the same word

Three friends crept along a back road looking for moose. Something seven feet tall crossed in front of the car in two seconds, and a man in his front yard just stared back at them.

We all scream 'Sasquatch' at the same time.

The teller had never given Sasquatch a single serious thought. They were staying at a friend's family cabin in Coos County, the far north of New Hampshire, with more than ten people. Most of the group went off to shoot at a sandpit up the road. The teller and their girlfriend weren't interested, so a friend who was heading out to fly fish alone invited them along.

They had seen moose earlier near Pittsburg, so the three of them decided to go "moosing" on the way. The friend drove slowly down the back roads while they all peered into the tree line.

Without warning the friend slammed on the brakes, and all three of them shouted "Sasquatch!" at the same moment. A giant, hairy, upright figure, about seven feet tall, with long arms and brown hair, was crossing the road ahead of them. It stepped into the trees at the side of the road. The whole thing took perhaps two seconds, and it moved so smoothly it seemed to glide.

The friend drove up to the spot where it had gone in. There was nothing there. They could see a hundred feet into the woods and there was no sign of anything large moving away.

The part that still bothers the teller is the man and his child standing in their front yard about twenty yards further along. The three friends rolled slowly past, stunned, assuming the man had just seen the same thing. He just stared back at them. Nobody said a word. The friend turned the car around twice on the same stretch of road and they saw nothing more.

They talked about little else for the rest of the trip. Back at the cabin, only one person in the larger group believed them.

Five years on, the teller says they think about that day almost every week. They still believe most of the footage online is fake, and they rarely bring the story up because they know how it sounds. Their girlfriend tells it to their close friends, and the teller ends up explaining it and feeling foolish. The friend who was driving finds the whole thing funny and will tell anyone who asks, plainly, what they saw.

The teller has thought through every objection a skeptic would raise: why no one has caught one, why there's no clear footage. They've even wondered whether it could have been some kind of shared illusion. But they keep coming back to the same problem. Three people saw the same thing at the same moment and shouted the same word, and they can't explain that away.
