For weeks, Yolo County papers ran yarns about a freak of nature in the mountains at the head of Capay Valley, nicknamed the What-is-It. Two more men then said they had followed the creature to its lair.

Tacoma fishermen bring in a sea serpent
Tacoma, Washington
Two Tacoma fishermen said they caught a live sea serpent in Puget Sound: smooth-skinned, spotted like a tiger, about 17 feet long by one account. Later reports spoke of two smaller ones from Hood Canal, eight and ten feet long, put on show in Tacoma.
