Wilmington, North Carolina
Hundreds of people on Wilmington's streets and wharves watched a brilliant floating mass move rapidly west of the city. Many said they could see a network like rigging around it. It was one of the few East Coast reports during the 1897 wave.

A schoolman fights an unknown animal on the prairie
Miller, South Dakota
Professor J. H. Snoddy, 65, out at night looking for his horse, sat down on what he took for a rock, and it sprang at his throat. He fought it off six times with a bridle and a penknife on the way home.
