The Westall sighting

April 6, 1966 ยท Westall High School, Clayton South, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Students and teachers at a Melbourne school watched a silvery object descend near the school; no beings were reported.

Important caveat: Westall is an object sighting. No witness reported beings or occupants, and it appears in this section only because it is Australia's best-known mass close encounter, often paired with the Ariel School case.

On the morning of April 6, 1966, students and a teacher at Westall High School in Melbourne's south-east saw a flying object they described as round, domed and white, grey or silver. Witnesses said it came down behind a row of trees into an open area called the Grange, south of the school. Some said it landed and took off again; others said it only hovered, and some recalled several small aircraft circling it. Students who ran to the Grange described flattened or burnt circles in the grass, though accounts of the number and appearance of the circles vary.

The next day The Age newspaper suggested a weather balloon released from Laverton. Air force personnel and UFO enthusiasts visited the field on April 9 and reported nothing of interest, and the landowner later burned off the field. Researcher Keith Basterfield found documents suggesting a stray balloon from the HIBAL high-altitude radiation-sampling programme may have come down near the school, which would fit descriptions of a silvery object with a trailing parachute. Skeptic Brian Dunning added that a towed aircraft target could explain the circling planes. Some witnesses later said men in suits told them not to talk about it.

No government records documenting an investigation have been made public, which many witnesses find frustrating. Skeptic Richard Saunders argues that decades of retelling have blended real memories with false ones. The case is the subject of the documentary Westall '66, a 2026 episode of the ABC's Australian Story, anniversary reunions and the City of Kingston's Grange Reserve UFO Park playground.
