In February 1975 newspapers in Puerto Rico reported that farm animals in the Rocha neighbourhood of Moca had been found dead with puncture wounds and their blood apparently drained. The toll included fifteen cows, three goats, two geese and a pig. The unknown killer was dubbed the Vampiro de Moca.
Similar reports followed during 1975 in Corozal, Fajardo and rural San Juan, and some residents linked the deaths to UFO sightings. No culprit was ever identified, though feral dogs and other predators were suggested.
When livestock killings were reported again in Canóvanas in the 1990s, the attacker got a new name: the chupacabra. Moca's vampire is often seen as its direct ancestor.
