Cadejo

Also called El Cadejo, Cadejos, Cadejo blanco, Cadejo negro

A spectral dog of Central American folklore: a white one protects night travellers, a black one hunts them.

The cadejo is a ghostly dog that appears to people walking lonely roads at night in Central America and parts of Mexico. It is usually described as a large, shaggy dog, sometimes as big as a cow, with glowing eyes, sometimes with goat hooves, and dragging chains.

In many places there are two: a white cadejo that guards travellers, and a black cadejo that tries to kill them and is linked to the devil. In Guatemala and El Salvador the cadejo is also said to protect drunk people on their way home. In Costa Rica it is a single black dog that is frightening but usually harmless.

Folklorists trace it to Maya and Nahua beliefs about animal companions and dogs that guide the dead, blended with European black dog stories.
