Black-eyed children

Also called Black-eyed kids, BEK, BEKs, Black eyed kids, Black-eyed people, BEP

Pale children with solid black eyes who knock at night and insist on being invited in.

Black-eyed children look like ordinary kids or teens, usually pale and oddly dressed, until you see their eyes, which are completely black with no whites. They knock on doors or tap on car windows late at night and ask, politely but insistently, to be let in to use the phone or get a ride. Witnesses say they feel a wave of dread they cannot explain. A common thread is that they cannot come in unless you invite them, so they keep asking, more and more insistently.

The legend traces to Brian Bethel, a reporter in Abilene, Texas, who said two black-eyed boys approached his car one night in 1996. He posted the story to a ghost-story mailing list in 1998, and it spread through forums, TV shows and, in 2014, a burst of British tabloid front pages. Bethel still says the encounter happened.

It is a modern, internet-era legend: researchers have found no documented cases beyond first-hand posts and friend-of-a-friend stories, and the tale fits a long line of 'don't let it in' folklore, from vampires to changelings.
